Spend a gap year or season at Hobbiton

Hobbiton’s volunteer instructors are exposed to a variety of courses and assist in facilitating our camps and workshops. Experience working with different age groups, discover your own strengths and conquer your weaknesses in preparation for a meaningful future.

COURSES & WORKSHOPS

INSTRUCTOR & SAFETYCOURSE

While training and facilitating all the Hobbiton activities with visiting groups, you will complete a detailed instructor and safety course.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

You will gain skills and knowledge, and create a 'portfolio of evidence' of your learning that will equip you for a new world of work.

LEADERSHIP & COACHING

We offer leadership and team-building courses to organisations and schools. You will complete 'Train the Trainer' courses to equip you to facilitate workshops and training.

ROPES COURSE

We have high, medium and low ropes courses at Hobbiton and you will most certainly be roped in!

FIRST AID COURSE

All our instructors and volunteers need to be able to deal with emergency situations.

SOCIAL MEDIA ADVOCACY

You will learn how to create a strong and effective social media presence for yourself and how to do social media advocacy in support of a cause.

ACCOMMODATION & MEALS

The volunteer contract comes with free accommodation which may at times be shared with other volunteers of the same gender. The instructors’ houses are basic and sleep four to six people in total, with up to two of the same gender in a room. Each bedroom has two beds and a cupboard. The kitchen is equipped with a stove, microwave, kettle, toaster and fridge. Additional freezer space is available for use in the main kitchen and there is a washing machine in every house. There is also a comfortable common room with a pool table, satellite TV, foosball, table tennis and internet access. When we are catering for guests, you will need to assist with serving and will join the clients for meals.. At other times you will need to provide your own food and cater for yourself.

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • Your signature denotes your acceptance of all the provided information.
  • A minimum commitment of three (3) months is expected in order for volunteers to be placed in our centre.
  • Hobbiton pays no allowance or stipends. Volunteers will have to self-cater although some meals may be provided by us when we cater for group bookings.
  • The volunteer contract comes with free accommodation which may at times be shared with other volunteers of the same gender.
  • To reach Hobbiton – you could choose to take an internal flight from Johannesburg to East London where we would collect you.
  • The first two weeks in Hobbiton are for orientation only. We will offer basic training which may include shadowing an experienced outdoor instructor.
  • The volunteer instructor’s main task is to help to facilitate our outdoor education activities. However, they are at times required to assist with the maintenance of equipment and facilities.
  • Basic conditions of the workplace are adhered to. Therefore, once a volunteer passes the Instructor’s Competency test, they are scheduled for duty and weekends off on a rotational basis.
  • Our peak season may be strenuous with instructors and volunteers working up to 14 hours a day when there are large groups. To compensate for the long hours, extra time off will be arranged.
